21. 10. 2016

Author: Filip Šebek

In a few days, the jubilee 20th Jihlava IDFF will start and Institute of Documentary Film is proud to be a co-organizer of a part of its industry programme.  IDF will also be present in the form of many films screened within the wide spectre of the festival's programme sections, as they were supported in diverse stages of production or distribution by our activities. In the competition section Between the Seas there will be four films, whose authors we met at our events, the competition section Czech Joy will present eight new Czech documentaries.

In Between the Seas competition section, which represents  the countries and nations of Central and Eastern Europe, including their historical, political, and cultural interrelationships, will introduce for example the film by Robert Kirchhoff A Hole in the Head, which was presented earlier this year at East Doc Platform (at that time, its working title was Through the Forest) . The renowned Slovak director had decided to confront the present day society forgetting about the holocaust of the Roma people with the memories of the survivors of these terrible events.

In the same section, there will be also an Ex Oriente Film workshop 2013 alumnus, Croatian documentary A Two Way Mirror screened. In six poetical chapters, the authors approach the path to self-awareness, inner peace, and harmony. Polish documentary Monk of the Sea,  presented formerly at East European Forum 2012 and a member of East Silver Caravan 2016, also made it to Jihlava’s programme. Its director, Rafal Skalski is covering a 15-day stay of a young man named Ball in a Buddhist monastery. According to the Thai tradition, he should be undergoing a symbolic transition from the wild student life to the moderate adulthood. Between the Seas will further present the newest film by Salomé Jashi, The Dazzling Light of Sunset, participant of East Doc Platform 2013, East European Forum 2015 and East Silver 2016. You can find more about the film in an interview with the director here.
The selection of the best new Czech documentaries will traditionally be introduced within the Czech Joy competition section. Those, who attended the Evening with Czech  documentaries, organized by IDF, will already be familiar with the authors and focus of the titles Blind Gulliver and The Little Mole and Laozi (the latter one is also part of this year’s East Silver). Now they can enjoy them on the big screen before they are officially released. Others may remember the Czech Docs... Coming Soon presentations to the representatives of prestigious film festivals at East Doc Platform of FC Roma, Normal Autistic Film  or  My Name is Hungry Buffalo. Now the time has come for these thought-provoking films to be judged by the wide public.

Czech Joy also invites the audience to watch the documentary from the Czech Journal series - Teaching War by Adela Komrzý, Love Me If You Can by Dagmar Smržová and, as an opening film of the whole festival, the film by Petra Nesvačilová, Helena’s Law about a courageous policewoman who stood up against a criminal gang. This trio is also supported by IDF, specifically by East Silver Market. We wish all the best to the authors of all screened titles and hope they will win the hearts of both the audience and festival jurors.
