Birdless

Directing: Dragan Gmizic

Synopsis

Each year, tens of thousands of birds are being killed to fulfill the orders of high-class European restaurants. "Birdless" follows the young ornithologist Milan Ružić and his international colleagues in a blistering struggle against quail and turtledove poaching in Serbia. Despite the evidence of illegal hunting and bird trade, the authorities refuse to react and the poaching continues, posing a serious threat to survival of several bird species in South and South-Eastern Europe. The direct clash with the greedy hunters could be the only option left for these men, determined to keep the birds in the sky and off the menus. The archive footage blends with recipes for various delicacies, while Ružić takes great risks in order to come closer to both poachers and EU catering facilities. Their interfering with nature in a corrupt capitalist manner is being referred to as culinary art, whereas it is actually a distorted path of an organized crime network, far more aggressive than Milan Ružić could have imagined.
Through a political, ecological and emotional story that takes place in front of our eyes, as well as by using archive footage and valuable testimonies, "Birdless" aims to reveal the dark side of European gastronomic extravagance and how it enables the expansion of international organized crime.
A thriller like investigation with strong lead and support characters becomes a western fable across the Pannonian flatland.
