His films have participated in and have received many awards at numerous festivals throughout the world. His 2014 mockumentary Escaping Riga, which premiered at IDFA, is a «true and notice-worthy» story about two exceptional 20th century Riga-born personalities: film director Sergei Eisenstein and philosopher Isaiah Berlin. His most recently released film, D is for Division, explores two worlds defined by a dividing line, two contradictory views of the past as well as the present. A film dealing with the tension existing on the borders between Europe and Russia, the film premiered at Visions du Reél 2018. Currently, Simanis is in production directing his latest endeavor, Frankenstein 2.0, a film exploring the rich theme of immortality.
