Anna Hoffmann studied cultural anthropology and film and theatre science at the University of Hamburg and archival science in Potsdam, although the real school of film was the Hamburg cinemathèque Metropolis where she started at the box office while still attending university and later became a programmer. Then gathered first film festival experience as a programmer for the European Low Budget Film Forum in Hamburg (1987-1989). From 1993-1996 she was managing the European Documentary Film Institute (EDI) in Mülheim/Ruhr, after being a freelance film critic and production assistant as well as a translator and subtitler. Since 2000 programmer and program manager for the Berlinale Forum.
